K: knit
P: purl
K(b): knit into stitch of previous row.

Step by step:

Cast on an even number of stitches.

On R1 knit 1K/1P until the end of the row, the last stitch always being 1P.
From R2 continue knitting 1K and 1P, but all knit stitches should now be knitted by inserting the needle into the knit stitch of the previous row.
