CONSTRUCTION

Sizes 6 and 12 months.

I recommend reading the entire pattern before you start knitting.

This cardigan is knitted in one piece. It starts at the neckline, and increases are made at the armholes to create raglan sleeves. It only has seams on the sleeves.

With 3.5mm knitting needles, cast on 72 stitches. Knit 6 rows in 1x1 rib stitch.

On the next right-side row, begin knitting in stockinette stitch and place markers as follows: 14 stitches, M, 8 stitches, M, 28 stitches, M, 8 stitches; M, 14 stitches.

On the next right-side row, we will begin making increases to form the armholes. We will make increases before and after each marker. At the same time, we will knit charts A and B at the beginning and end of each row.

We will make 17 increases for the 6-month size and 19 increases for the 12-month size. This will result in 208 stitches (6-month size) and 224 stitches (12-month size).

Below is a table with the right-side rows (increases) and wrong-side rows to make it clearer. For the 6-month size, we will knit up to row 34 of the table, and for the 12-month size, up to row 38.

On the next right-side row (row 35 for 6-month size, row 39 for 12-month size), we will knit the stitches for the first front and the first sleeve: 73p (6-month size) 79p (12-month size). Turn the work and knit only the stitches for the sleeve: 42p (6-month size) 46p (12-month size).

For the 6-month size, continue knitting only the sleeve stitches. At 12cm from the armhole, on a right-side row, make one decrease on each side as follows: knit 2 stitches, k2tog, continue knitting until 4 stitches remain, then k2tog, 2 stitches.

2cm after the first decrease, on the right side of the work, make two more decreases, one on each side in the same way. You will have 38 stitches left.

On the next wrong-side row, knit in 1x1 rib stitch for 2cm and bind off all stitches. To make the cuff elastic, knit the stitches as they appear and bind them off. The sleeve will measure 16cm.

For the 12-month size, continue knitting only the sleeve stitches.

And after another 2cm, make two more decreases on each side. You will have 40 stitches.

On the next wrong-side row, knit in 1x1 rib stitch for 2cm and bind off all stitches. To make the cuff elastic, knit the stitches as they appear and bind them off. The sleeve will measure 18cm.

Cut the yarn, add new yarn from the ball, and knit the back stitches plus the second sleeve stitches: 104p (6-month size) and 112p (12-month size). Turn the work and knit only the sleeve stitches: 42p (6-month size) 46p (12-month size).

Continue knitting the second sleeve in the same way as the first.

After binding off the second sleeve, cut the yarn and add new yarn from the ball, continue knitting the second front: 31p (6-month size) and 33p (12-month size) (remember to continue with the chart).

Turn the work and knit the second front, the back, and the first front together: 124p (6-month size) and 132p (12-month size).

Continue knitting in stockinette stitch with all stitches, while also knitting charts A and B.

When the body measures 14 cm (6-month size) and 16cm (12-month size) from the armholes, knit in 1x1 rib stitch for 2cm with ALL stitches (do not continue with the charts). Bind off all stitches, just like binding off the cuffs, and cut the yarn. The body will measure 16cm (6-month size) and 18cm (12-month size) from the armhole.

Finally, pick up all the stitches along each front, from the neckline to the bottom of the body, to knit the button bands and buttonholes. Knit the button bands in 1x1 rib stitch for 6 rows and bind off all stitches.

On the right-side button band, make the buttonholes on row 3. The first 2cm from the top edge, and the others spaced 3cm apart. Make them as follows: k2tog, yo.

Now, sew the sleeves, weave in ends, and sew on the buttons.
