Indian Mix Tapestry

Exclusive design by Own Style DIY with tutorial available on our YouTube Channel.

In this tutorial, you will learn the basics of locker hooking and latch hooking, two very simple techniques. In the past, these techniques were widely used for making rugs, then they also became fashionable for making tapestries, although you can make anything you can
imagine.

Let your creativity fly to make tapestries, rugs, cushions, bags, decorate chairs, and a million other ideas you can think of. Besides being easy, it's a very relaxing technique, just let yourself go and enjoy creating.

MATERIALS

Canvas or plastic mesh, this is the base where you will apply the techniques.
Locker hook needle and latch hook needle
1 ball of Trendy Home, 1 ball of Soft Mohair and 1 skein of Cool Wool

1. The first thing you need to do is prepare the mesh to the size you want for the tapestry, keeping in mind that you will need to leave a margin for a hem so that the edges do not fray. Ideally, you should leave at least two squares for the hem.

2. Once the hem is prepared, you can paint the design you are going to make on the mesh. You can also do it after the hem is made. Remember that the design will serve as a guide; you may need to modify something after making that hem.

3. Now you are going to make the hem with the Trendy Home yarn. Take a long strand and use the locker hook needle to do it; you can also use a tapestry needle. Fold back the piece you left for the hem and simply insert it through one hole and out the other side. You will go around that piece to secure it well.

4. When you have finished the border or hem, you will begin your tapestry. Start by making the braid or spike that creates one large and one smaller rhombus. You will do this with the Cook Wool skein and with the help of the locker hook needle and your fingers. You must be very careful in this process not to break the mesh and not to undo the yarn too much. Pay close attention to the video.

5. Once you have both rhombuses ready, the large and the small one, you will start with the locker hook part. You will start with this part so that you can then work well on the mesh without the other latch hook parts getting in the way. It is not a complicated technique, but watching the video will help you understand it better. It involves carrying a strand in the eye of the needle and picking up the yarn from underneath through the holes in the mesh.

6. Now you are going to start latch hooking in the small central rhombus and in the two triangles at the top of the rhombus. Decide if you want to leave the locker hook part horizontally or vertically. The latch hook technique is very simple and you will do it with the help of its own needle. For this part, I have used Soft Mohair. It involves using this hook to insert the small strands into the mesh and pull the yarn through the square above, securing it by creating a knot. I advise you to cut the strands to the same length and have them prepared, to make the work easier. Depending on what you want to make, you will cut the strands to one length or another; I made them about 10 cm. Once this part is finished, you will need to trim the excess and adjust it to the desired length.

7. You will now move on to making the bottom fringes, which are made with Trendy Home and Soft Mohair. You will do this part with the help of the latch hook needle. It is the same as the previous one, except you will make the strands longer. The Trendy Home ones about 45-50 cm and the soft mohair ones a little shorter. Keep in mind that you will then have to cut them to the same length and give them a pointed shape. First make the bottom fringe part to make it easier, leave a space between the braid or spike and start placing the fringes. Then place the row of soft mohair fringes closer to the braid or spike.

8. Finally, you are going to make the central braid which is made with Cool Wool. Cut one long strand about 80 cm and another about 40 cm. You insert the longer one through two different holes to create two of the braid strands, and you insert the shorter one into a hole and tie a knot behind it so it doesn't come undone. Now you just have to make the braid and secure it with any leftover yarn you have, I did it with Trendy Home.

Your tapestry is ready, I hope you enjoyed making it. This is my contribution to these two ancient techniques, which we are now bringing to life with modern designs and very creative ideas. I encourage you to make your own designs and play around creating new accessories or home decor with different textures.
